US Piracy - Hearts and Minds, Anyone?

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has described a US military raid inside Syria as an act of criminal and terrorist aggression and vowed that Syria will retaliate if its borders are violated again.

An anonymous US official has reportedly confirmed that the American military launched the raid which Syria says killed eight civilians, including a father and his three children.

"We consider this criminal, and terrorist aggression. We put the responsibility on the American Government and they need to investigate and return back to us with a result and explanation why they did it," Mr Muallem said during a visit to London to meet his British counterpart David Milliband.

France has condemned the raid. Lets' hope the rest of the EEC countries follow suit. France is currently holding the EU's rotating presidency so this should add a bit of weight. The Pentagon are already spinning some rubbish about a senior Al Quaeda leader being killed in the raid. If this was true, which it isn't, it would be first time they had failed to kill the completely innocent in years (in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and now Syria).

Now the Syrians as well as the Afghans can look forward to being liberated to death by the US just like the Iraqis.

The Iraqis are going bonkers about this.Ali Dabbagh, the Iraqi government spokesman is reported as responing: "The constitution does not allow Iraq to be used as a staging ground to attack neighboring countries." The Assistant Foreign Minister Labid Abbawi added, "We are trying to contain the fallout from the incident. It is regrettable and we are sorry it happened." A prominent Kurdish politician, Mahmud Othman, confirmed that the raid been carried out without informing the central government in Baghdad. He said such action would only add to the anti-American sentiment in Iraq and make it harder for Iraqi officials to sign the controversial Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) security agreement with the US government which has been debated for months by Washington and Baghdad.
