Iraq War’s legacy of lies: Gwyn | Toronto Star:
"It is the blatancy of the lying, of its scale and, far from least, of its considerable success for quite a while (a confession: I myself for a time believed the nonsense that the invasion’s purpose was to liberate Iraq to bring about a democracy) that makes the Iraq War stand apart from almost all others.
The costs of this deceit have been appalling. Some 110,000 Iraqis were killed during the conflict (a considerable number, it must be stressed, not by the invaders but by other Iraqis). The American losses, of both troops and “contractors,” totals some 8,000.
The cost to the U.S. treasury is some $2 trillion dollars, and much more when account is taken of the interest charges since, as in Vietnam, no taxes were raised to pay for the expenses."
