Jonkind is regarded as a precursor of the Impressionists. Saw some of his more obscure etchings at a fabulous Impressionist exhibition at the Burrell Museum in Glasgow this week. It is on until the end of the year. I noticed from the visitors book that people had travelled from all over the UK. By chance we got a private guided tour by a hugely knowledgable lady called Margaret who explained that the Franco-Prussian War (like all wars I suppose) produced new ideas in France in its aftermath. The Impressionist Movement was one. She said only a handful of artists considered themselves part of it. Fantin-Latour, Manet, Sisley and Cezanne among them. The pre and post-impressionists were not included in the exhibition. Other new developments which hugely influenced the movement were the advent of paint in tubes and the spread of the railways (allowing Paris-based artists to travel more widely in France).
Beautifully atmospheric. I haven't been to an art museum or show in a while. I should remedy that...
