The bootlegger Lewis Rosenstiel became a magnate of the Schenley Whisky company after prohibition and was a leading underworld figure as well as a friend of J Edgar Hoover. A sinister and fascinating story. I used to have a Schenley whisky glass with the livery painted on it. It dated from the early 50s. My uncle had liberated it while on a trans-atlantic boat trip back from America. But one of my kids broke it.
I just watched it on our local PBS station.
ReplyDeleteI did not know how much of an influence booze had on America in the early years.
Maybe if the country would have stayed drunk, they would not have wanted to become an empire.LOL
