China welcomes a recent UN Security Council resolution onIraq, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Tuesday.
The UN Security Council on Thursday eased some of its sanctions against Iraq,marking progress in resolving pending issues from the Middle Eastern country's 1990invasion of its smaller neighbor Kuwait.
The new resolution calls for the Iraqi government to continue searching for Kuwaitinationals and property missing since the invasion, but terminates provisions in earliertexts that allowed the military enforcement of measures under Charter VII of the UNCharter.
Hua said at a regular press briefing that China supports the UN in playing an active rolein addressing relevant issue.
China attaches importance to developing relations with Iraq and is ready to boost tieson the basis of equality and mutual benefit, she said.
