A spokesman for the Egyptian junta said on BBC Radio 4 this morning that charges will be brought against President Morsi for 'espionage'. When pressed, he hesitatingly said this was because of contacts with Hamas. When further pressed he admitted that the contacts took place before his election as President. This is significant. The phrase 'trumped up' was almost invented for such a scenario. Interestingly, it was only on Thursday that the UN was pressed once again by USrael to categorize Hamas as a 'terrorist organisation'. Such a retrospective arrangement by a compliant UN would make the fit-up of Morsi easier to spin by the US securocrats and Israel-firsters. This is of course a recipe for civil war in Egypt. The massacre of Morsi supporters in Tahrir Square will be recorded in history as the first shots of that war. Apologies of the jusifiably graphic nature of the picture of that incident.
