An unknown number of militants mounted the attack in Ayn al-Jahish, a village in a remote part of Nineveh province outside the city of Mosul.
A medical official told the Associated Press that eight of the soldiers were beheaded, while the others were shot.
The attack comes amid a surge in sectarian violence in Iraq.
Iraqi government data says more than 1,000 people were killed in January, the highest monthly toll for almost six years.
