The Davids Report, a 551-page document released last week, is an exhaustive independent enquiry carried out in the Netherlands to examine the Dutch participation in the war in Iraq. Its conclusion is as crystal clear as it is simple to understand: There was no basis in international law for this war. It concludes that the UN Resolutions passed in the 1990s did not provide a legal basis for war and that “the military action had no sound mandate in international law”. It claimed the Dutch Government was swayed considerably by “evidence” produced by the British and US Governments at the time, although the USA abandoned the attempt to get a separate UN Resolution providing a mandate for war when it became apparent the UNSC would not grant it. Indeed in 2004, the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan declared that the war was illegal.
Over to you, Lord Chilcott when Milord Goldsmith comes to the Inquiry with his cock and bull story about changing his mind.
Any one who has been paying aqttention knows this was an illegal attack. They justified it with lies, fear, and more lies. The attack, invasion, occupation are all war crimes. Unfortunately these crime families will not be held accountable.
ReplyDeleteI agree, RZ, that the culprits are unlikely to end up in the dock at the Hague. I don't know if you follow the UK Chilcott Inquiry in America but a modicum of accountability is emerging despite the ineptitude of the Panel. Blair, without whom Bush could not have gone ahead, has been exposed on a number of fronts. He attends the Inquiry in a few weeks and, although he is a studied liar and spin-merchant, he has woven such an intricate web of deceit over the years that we are all looking forward to him tying himself in knots. He is worse that Bush in as much as he did not have the excuse of being congenitally stupid.
ReplyDeleteTony, the number of people pushing for a war crimes prosecutions against Blair may be bigger than you think -
